Ea a fost elaborat\u0103 \u00een 1948 de fizicienii Thomas Gold, Hermann Bondi \u015fi Fred Hoyle, care au conceput-o dup\u0103 ce au v\u0103zut filmul <strong><em>&#8222;Sf\u00e2r\u015fitul nop\u0163ii&#8221;<\/em><\/strong>, un film care se termina prin \u00eentoarcerea la situa\u0163ia cu care a \u00eenceput. <em>\u015ei dac\u0103 Universul ar fi a\u015fa?<\/em> s-au \u00eentrebat ei. Ei \u015ftiau c\u0103 Universul se afl\u0103 \u00een expansiune, dar nu le pl\u0103cea ideea c\u0103 trebuie s\u0103 fi avut un \u00eenceput, idee c\u0103tre care p\u0103rea s\u0103 conduc\u0103 expansiunea. Ei voiau ca Universul s\u0103 \u00eenf\u0103\u0163i\u015feze acela\u015fi aspect general observatorilor \u00een toate timpurile, de la trecutul infinit p\u00e2n\u0103 la viitorul infinit. A\u015fa c\u0103 au conceput un model \u00een care Universul era, \u00een medie, \u00eentotdeauna la fel \u015fi nu avea niciun \u00eenceput.<\/p>\n<p>Ei au presupus c\u0103 materia, \u00een loc s\u0103 fi fost creat\u0103 la un anumit moment \u00een trecut, e creat\u0103 mereu, exact \u00een ritmul necesar pentru a compensa diluarea ei provocat\u0103 de expansiune, men\u0163in\u00e2ndu-se astfel o densitate constant\u0103 a materiei \u00een Univers. Aceast\u0103 stare de lucruri exist\u0103 dintr-un trecut etern \u015fi va continua la nesf\u00e2r\u015fit. Dimpotriv\u0103, scenariul &#8222;Big Bang&#8221; al Universului \u00een expansiune presupune o densitate \u00een sc\u0103dere, un \u00eenceput, \u015fi niciun fel de crea\u0163ie continu\u0103. \u00cen treac\u0103t fie zis, ritmul de crea\u0163ie cerut de scenariul st\u0103rii sta\u0163ionare e uluitor de mic (aproximativ un atom pe metru cub la fiecare 10 miliarde de ani), iar un asemenea proces lent e imposibil de observat direct. Motivul pentru care e at\u00e2t de mic \u0163ine de faptul c\u0103 exist\u0103 foarte pu\u0163in\u0103 materie \u00een Univers. Dac\u0103 toate stelele \u015fi galaxiile din Universul actual ar fi diluate \u00eentr-un ocean uniform de atomi, ar exista abia un atom \u00een fiecare metru cub de spa\u0163iu. E un vid incomparabil mai bun dec\u00e2t orice vid s-ar putea vreodat\u0103 atinge \u00een laboratoarele de pe P\u0103m\u00e2nt. Spa\u0163iul extraterestru e, \u00een cea mai mare parte, chiar asta \u2013 spa\u0163iu.<\/p>\n<p>Unul dintre meritele acestei propuneri de univers sta\u0163ionar este caracterul s\u0103u bine definit. Se ob\u0163in astfel previziuni foarte exacte despre felul \u00een care ar ar\u0103ta Universul, \u015fi de aceea modelul poate fi invalidat prin observa\u0163ii. Ceea ce s-a \u015fi \u00eent\u00e2mplat. Galaxiile care sunt surse puternice de unde radio nu au fost la fel de abundente \u00een toate epocile din istoria cosmosului.<\/p>\n<p>\u00cen 1965, c\u00e2nd Penzias \u015fi Wilson au descoperit radia\u0163ia de fond de microunde. O asemenea radia\u0163ie termic\u0103 nu putea fi prezent\u0103 \u00eentr-un Univers sta\u0163ionar, pentru c\u0103 el nu cunoscuse \u00een trecut o perioad\u0103 fierbinte cu o densitate colosal\u0103; un astfel de Univers trebuie s\u0103 fi fost dintotdeauna rece \u015fi t\u0103cut. \u00cen plus, observa\u0163iile ulterioare asupra abunden\u0163ei elementelor u\u015foare din Univers se potriveau cu modelul Big Bang \u015fi confirmau ideea c\u0103 au fost produse prin reac\u0163ii nucleare \u00een timpul primelor 3 minute de expansiune.
