Pentru a repera aceste obiecte invizibile, oamenii de \u015ftiin\u0163\u0103 au observat timp de doi ani lumina emis\u0103 de milioanele de stele din Marele Nor al lui Magellan. Dintre alte piste, trebuie s\u0103 enumer\u0103m relicvele de stele. Dup\u0103 ce \u015fi-au ars toate rezervele de carburant, aceste relicve degenereaz\u0103, \u00een func\u0163ie de masa lor, \u00een pitice alte, stele cu neutroni sau, pentru cele mai masive, \u00een g\u0103uri negre. Acestea din urm\u0103, totu\u015fi, nu sunt considerate drept bune candidate pentru materia neagr\u0103, \u00eentruc\u00e2t emit v\u00e2lv\u0103t\u0103i de raze X \u015fi gamma atunci c\u00e2nd absorb gaz, praf sau materie stelar\u0103.<\/p>\n<p>Mai r\u0103m\u00e2n norii de gaz. \u00cen luna noiembrie 1996, o echip\u0103 condus\u0103 de Stuart Bowyer, de la Centrul de astrofizic\u0103 al Universit\u0103\u0163ii din California, a anun\u0163at descoperirea unui nor enorm de gaz foarte cald cu un diametru de 2,6 ani-lumin\u0103 \u00een inima \u00eengr\u0103m\u0103dirii stelare Coma. Asemenea nori de gaz, detecta\u0163i \u015fi \u00een \u00eengr\u0103m\u0103direa Virgo, ar putea foarte bine s\u0103 c\u00e2nt\u0103reasc\u0103 greu \u00een balan\u0163a \u201edetectivilor&#8221; de materie neagr\u0103. Ca atare, cercet\u0103torii consider\u0103 c\u0103 solu\u0163ia vine de materia non barionic\u0103.
